Virtual Private Network (VPN)
The University VPN provides UCD staff with a secure way to connect their devices to the University network, from home, while on a business trip or when using public Wi-Fi.
Please read Remote Access Procedure before remotely accessing University applications or IT services.

When should I use the University VPN? The majority of University systems are designed to be
available outside of the University network. The VPN is only required to access University systems
that are not available outside of the campus network or when accessing confidential University
information on an untrusted network such as a public Wi-Fi hotspot, hotel Wi-Fi, conference centre
Who can use the University VPN? The VPN is available to all UCD staff. Just download the VPN
client from UCD Software Downloads and follow the setup instructions.
What about Students? The VPN is available to Research students on request. To request VPN
access, please ask your Head of School or Department to log a call with the IT Helpdesk providing
your UCD Connect username, email address, the reason why remote access is required and a
number that we can contact you on during working hours.
How do I login? When starting the VPN, choose the General profile and login using your UCD
Connect credentials. Researchers should use the Research profile.
Can I save my password to the VPN client? For security reasons, the software does not allow you to
save your credentials into the client or app.
The VPN is not working, what do I do? Please try the following before contacting the IT Helpdesk:
- Check that your UCD Connect credentials are correct. Have you changed your password
- After initial login or if you have forgotten to disconnect the VPN it may stall or hang. We suggest that you restart your device and try again.
If these don’t work, please contact the IT Helpdesk.
Help, I need support? Please contact the IT Helpdesk on ext. 2700, by email at email@example.com or
call into either of the two IT Support centres in UCD Health Sciences or Daedalus buildings.
