The Irish in Britain: A Conversation with the Diaspora - Dermot Gallagher

1969 Joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and, in addition to various periods in Dublin, served in his earlier career in San Francisco, at the United Nations in New York, at the Embassy in London, as Deputy Chef de Cabinet at the European Commission in Brussels, and as Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1985 - 1987.

1987 – 1991 Assistant Secretary-General in charge of the Anglo-Irish Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs, with overall responsibility for British-Irish relations, including Northern Ireland policy.

1991 – 1997 Ambassador to the United States of America.

1997 – 2000 Second Secretary-General, Department of Foreign Affairs, with responsibility for British-Irish relations, including Northern Ireland policy and the negotiation and implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, 1998, which brought a definitive settlement to the Northern Ireland question.

2000 – 2001 Secretary-General, Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister).

2001- 2009 Secretary-General, Department of Foreign Affairs.

2009 Appointed Chairperson of the Governing Authority of University College, Dublin.

2009 Appointed Chairman of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, which was established by the Government to provide an independent oversight of policing in Ireland.
