UCD Team wins National Moot Court Competition

Congratulations to the UCD team of Sinead Rooney, Laura Scanlan and Rachel Duffy who won the Third Annual National Moot Court Competition, which took place last Saturday at the Criminal Courts of Justice Building in Dublin. Two other UCD teams took part and did well in the first two rounds, but did not progress to the semi-finals.

A previous UCD team - Brian McCormick, Matthew Morrow and Neal Flynn won the same competition last year,

The competition was hosted by Socio-Legal Research Centre in the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University, in association with Matheson Ormsby Prentice Solicitors. The final was adjudicated by The Honourable Mr Justice John Hedigan (of the High Court and Judge in Residence in the School of Law and Government, DCU), Dr Maura Kelly (Matheson) and Dr Noelle Higgins (Irish Centre for Human Rights).

The competition was based on a problem scenario on constitutional law, the European Convention on Human Rights, and family law which allowed the undergraduate students taking part to gain a greater understanding of how law operates in practice and to have an opportunity to develop their mooting skills and to apply the law in a formal court setting.

Teams from several Irish universities took part and the winning UCD team defeated a team of final-year DCU law students, Adam Assahli, Conall Shaw and Donna McNamara, in the final. Adam Assahli received the Best Speaker award.

Winners: Rachel Duffy, The Honourable Mr Justice John Hedigan, Sinéad Rooney and Laura Scanlon

Runners-up: Adam Assahli (Best Speaker), The Honourable Mr Justice John Hedigan, Conall Shaw and Donna McNamara

The two teams await the judges' decision, in the Criminal Courts of Justice Building last Saturday (Laura Scanlon out of shot).
