Law Open Evening 2011
UCD School of Law recently held an open evening for Fifth and Sixth Year students. Students met with the Dean (Professor Colin Scott) and several academics, as well as several current students. The students, many of whom travelled from neighbouring counties, welcomed the chance to get an insight into the broad range of degree programmes offered by the School. The Dean welcomed the students and spoke briefly about the changes to the curriculum: students are now introduced to clinical legal education and advocacy as part of their studies. He also highlighted the benefits of spending time abroad at one of our partner universities.
The Chairperson of the Student Legal Service, Sarah O’Meara, spoke about her time on Erasmus in the South of France and outlined her reasons for selecting the BCL (Law with Politics) programme. She spoke about her experience of running the SLS which provides information clinics across campus for undergraduates. Solicitor Emer Hunt, from Matheson Ormsby Prentice,who teaches Revenue Law in the School, talked about her career in law, her time working overseas and her decision to return to Dublin. She also gave students an insight into what her work in a large legal firm involves. The final speaker was Paul Hutchinson, Treasurer of LawSoc, who spoke about the social aspects of being a law student and how membership of the society had helped him integrate into college life. LawSoc organise public speaking, debating and mooting competitions, events and other public events. So far this semester, it has hosted a very successful Presidential Debate, a visit from the Weasley Brothers of Harry Potter Fame and had just presented Eddie Hobbs to a packed audience in the Newman Building.
The MC for the evening was Paul Ward, lecturer in family law, who chaired the question and answer session.
The School will have a stand at UCD Open Day 2011, which will take place on Saturday 12 November.
