International criminology conference held in UCD
Over 40 delegates recently attended an international one-day conference hosted by the School of Law at Nova UCD on the evidentiary challenges faced by international criminal tribunals. The conference was organised by Professor John Jackson, Professor of Criminal Law at UCD and by Dr Yassin M'Boge, former research fellow at UCD and now lecturer in law at the University of Leicester.
The opening address was delivered by Justice Teresa Doherty of the Special Court for Sierra Leone who has been presiding in the trial of the former Liberian President Charles Taylor. A number of scholars from universities in the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom as well as Ireland reflected on the distinct evidentiary issues which tribunals face when they operate in a post-conflict environment that is rich and complex in culture and tradition. The conference was also addressed by Justice Maureen Clark of the Irish High Court and a former judge at the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and at the International Criminal Court.
