Professor Susan Crawford visits the School of Law
Professor Susan Crawford visited the School of Law on Tuesday, 13 December and gave an informal seminar on the subject of the internet, infrastructure and communications law. Professor Crawford is the former Special Assistant for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy to President Obama. During her time at the White House she was described as Obama’s ‘Internet Tzar’. She is widely regarded as an expert on communications law and is currently Professor of Law at Cardozo Law School and a Visiting Scholar at Princeton. Professor Crawford is a graduate of Yale and, until recently, was on the faculty of the law school at the University of Michigan. She will shortly take up an appointment at Harvard Law School and the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard. Professor Crawford subscribes to the view that the value of the internet as a channel of communication rather than infrastructure should be at the heart of communications policy. She reflected on the challenges facing policy makers in the USA, the European Union and other parts of the world as different visions for the future global governance of the internet compete with one another and specific industries lobby for special protection of their interests, which risk grave damages to the fragile structure of the internet itself. The discussion also considered the challenges for developing countries in making a free and robust internet an engine for growth and development and the role which countries such as Ireland could play in promoting this.
