Irish Jurist Reception to Mark Contribution to Legal Scholarship
A reception, generously hosted by Thomson Reuters, recently took place in the Royal Irish Academy. The reception marked the publication of volume 46 of the Irish Jurist (new series) (2011). This, the current issue, commemorates the graduation, one hundred years ago, of the first students to graduate from the law school at UCD following its establishment as a constituent college of the National University of Ireland. More generally the reception marked the Irish Jurist’s contribution to legal scholarship and its new online presence on all three of Westlaw’s websites (WestlawIE, Westlaw UK, and Westlaw International).

The large attendance, on 8 December 2012, which included representatives from all sections of the legal profession and the public sector, was addressed by the editor Professor Paul O’Connor and guest speaker Mr. Justice Gerard Hogan. In his remarks Professor O’Connor dealt with the history of the Jurist and the background to the publication of the first issue back in 1848, along with the challenges confronting the publication of Irish academic law journals in the present day. In a warm tribute to the Jurist Mr. Justice Hogan described it as the gold standard of Irish law journals, referred to some of the celebrated contributors to it, and his own relationship to the journal as contributor and reader over many years.
