Applications invited for new PhD Scholarship Scheme for Chinese students
UCD and the China Scholarship Council affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China have established a unique scholarship scheme to assist Chinese students to pursue graduate research, in UCD, leading to a PhD.
The scheme facilitates Chinese students to benefit from 4 years funded full-time graduate research in one of Europe's leading research-intensive Universities.
The scheme aims to attract some of the very best students from China to UCD and to promote UCD within China as an attractive destination for graduate research programmes.
This is the fifth year this scheme has been run. To date, 48 students from leading Chinese Universities have been supported by the UCD CSC Scholarship Scheme, including three this year in the School of Law.
The School of Law is keen to encourage more Chinese students to take up these scholarships. Successful students under this UCD-CSC scheme will have their tuition fees paid by UCD and the CSC will cover the student's living expenses and airfares.

Procedure
Securing a UCD CSC Scholarship is a two stage process:
Stage 1: The student applies to UCD and upon approval is given an offer to carry out their doctoral programme under the supervision of a UCD academic.
Stage 2: The student uses the UCD offer letter to apply to the CSC in China. Only when the student has been approved in both jurisdictions is the scholarship awarded.
Key points
• Applications to this scholarship programme must be made via the online application system www.ucd.ie/apply
• The deadline for the submission of application is the 28th January 2011.
• Only those applications approved by the UCD Assessment Committee for CSC Scholarships in February 2011 are eligible to progress to the second stage and be considered by the CSC for funding.
• Applications that are late or incomplete will automatically be disqualified.
Putting together a draft research proposal
The system works best if the potential CSC students can link up with appropriate potential UCD Supervisors who are willing to support the application in the first instance, and supervise the student if the application is successful.
Therefore we recommend that students interested in pursuing studies in the School of Law at UCD should submit a draft research proposal to our Graduate Programme Director Ms. Niamh McCabe (Niamh.McCabe@ucd.ie). A draft research proposal should include:
(a) details of the research the student wishes to do;
(b) the context (i.e., telling us why this research seems important);
(c) the methodology (e.g., how you would you see yourself researching the material) and
(d) a short bibliography.
There is no word limit for the proposal; but it would normally be three or four pages long.
Students will then be given feedback which will help them to make their formal application to UCD under the Scheme.
