Judge in Residence meets with law students
One of Ireland's most distinguished and experienced European jurists, the Hon Mr Justice Cooke, was in residence this week in the School. Judge Cooke was appointed a Judge of the High Court in 2009 and was formerly a judge of the Court of First Instance of the European Communities.
Judge Cooke gave a lecture to first year constitutional law students on the ways in which the judiciary controls public bodies.
As well as meeting the academic staff, the judge held informal sessions with the School’s undergraduate students and graduate students throughout the week. There was substantial interest in meeting the Judge with, at times, queues of students forming to avail of the opportunity to speak with him about his judicial career, legal careers generally, the work of the European Court of Justice and other matters.
UCD School of Law was the first Irish law school to introduce a judge in residence programme, whichis one of a number of initiatives within the School to strengthen links between the academic and wider legal communities.
