UCD Law Lecturer publishes new book on the ECHR Act 2003
This month UCD Law Lecturer Dr Fiona de Londras and NUI Galway lecturer Dr Cliona Kelly published their new book entitled The European Convention on Human Rights Act: Operation, Impact and Analysis (Round Hall/Thomson Reuters). This is the first book to be published focusing solely on the operation and impact of the ECHR Act 2003, which transposed the European Convention on Human Rights into Irish law. The book’s concern is with assessing how the Act operates, considering the impact of the Act on legal processes within the State, and analysing both the individual provisions of the Act and the “gaps” or uncertainties that have emerged both in terms of the Act’s schema and the application of the legislation in practice.
In the foreword to the book, Mr Justice Hedigan of the High Court described it as a “most welcome and scholarly work” that “will be of inestimable benefit to all those in our legal structure who must grapple with this new dimension in Irish law”.
