Matheson Doctoral Scholarships in Commercial Law

UCD School of Law, with the generous support of Matheson Solicitors, is pleased to offer a scholarship to fund full-time doctoral research in commercial law in the School of Law.

This is the first of three consecutive Matheson doctoral scholarships that will be offered by UCD School of Law.

Applications are sought from exceptional graduates in law or a cognate field (applicants should hold at least an upper second class honours degree at undergraduate or graduate level). The PhD research will be undertaken full time over a period of four years. The scholarship is available to candidates commencing their studies in September 2012 and is tenable for a maximum of four years, renewable each year subject to satisfactory progress. The areas of commercial law in relation to which an application can be made may relate to (but are not confined to) such fields as financial services, commercial law, company law, and corporate governance.

The scholarship will include the payment of annual tuition fees and a bursary of €16,000 per year.

It is open to Irish, EU and International applicants. Applications should be accompanied by a research proposal indicating your research question, proposed methodology, and foreseen original contribution to the field.

Please also send a covering letter explaining:

  • Why you wish to undertake a PhD, and in particular, why you wish to undertake a PhD at UCD School of Law.
  • Why you would be a suitable recipient for the scholarship.

This letter should take up no more than two sides of an A4 page (single-spaced) and can be sent either as an email attachment to niamh.mccabe@ucd.ie or in hard copy to Ms. Niamh McCabe, Graduate Programme Manager, School of Law, UCD, Roebuck Castle, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the decision of the scholarship committee. No correspondence will be entered into about the committee’s decision.
