Biography:
Professor McMahon joined the UCD School of Law in 2004 from the Queen's University of Belfast. In 2007-08 he was Interim Dean and Head of the UCD School of Law and has served as Associate Dean from October 2008 to September 2010. He studied Law at the Queen's University of Belfast before undertaking his doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh. He was awarded his PhD in 1988 for his thesis on European Trade Policy in Agricultural Products, which was subsequently published by Martinus Nijhoff. Prior to his appointment at UCD, he lectured at Victoria University Wellington, the University of Leicester and the Queen's University of Belfast, where he was promoted to Professor of International Trade Law. |
Research Interests
| His research interests are primarily in the area of agricultural trade law in both the World Trade Organization and the EU in which he has published extensively and in the area of the EU's Development Cooperation Policy, with particular interest in the relationship with the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. He is currently supervising a number of research students who are working on: - Developing countries and the TRIPs Agreement. - Legal Protection of Traditional Medicines. - Interpretation of National Law in International Courts. - Quantifying the effects of food standards on trade. - EU Restrictions on High-Tech Exports to China. |

Other Activities
| Professor McMahon is the editor of the EU Current Developments section of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly. He has also undertaking training activities, sponsored by the EU, for trade officials dealing with the WTO Agreements on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade. |
