Biography:
| Dr Liam
Thornton is a lecturer in law and director of clinical legal education in the
School of Law, UCD. In UCD, Liam teaches on a number of courses, including General Introduction to Legal Studies, Property Law and Legal Practice II. Dr Thornton has responsibility for developing innovative clinical modules in UCD, which seek to provide legal organisations with the benefit of UCD law students skills and expertise in a wide variety of areas. Dr Thornton is currently developing modules that focus on providing students with key skills to undertake legal placements in a variety of organisations. Dr Thornton obtained a first class honours BCL (International) degree and his PhD from the Faculty of Law and the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights in University College Cork. Liam has also obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice (PgCHEP) from University of Ulster and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Liam's PhD research was supervised by Professor Siobhán Mullally (UCC) and funded by the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences. Liam's PhD examined reception conditions for asylum seekers in Ireland and the United Kingdom and explored the legal and administrative measures utilised to exclude asylum seekers from mainstream social assistance systems. Prior to taking up his position in UCD, Liam was Research and Policy Officer in the Irish Human Rights Commission (2008-9) and a lecturer in law in University of Ulster (2009-2012). |
Research Interests
|
My
core research interests examine a number of key themes, focusing mainly on the
intersections between human rights, state control, socio-economic rights and
migration. An underlying theme of my current research interests is on
governmentality and control of groups within society that political systems
deem problematic (with a particular focus on asylum seekers and immigrants). I have
a fascination with systems of governance and how these can be used (sometimes
at the same time) as a delivery mechanism to ensure protection of human rights,
yet also as a means of control and supervision of those deemed problematic. Irish social security law and asylum seekers
European law, social security, asylum/migration European
human rights law (Council of Europe) and European Union law are increasingly
concerned with the protection of socio-economic rights of asylum seekers. My
research focuses on how this occurred and the normative basis for protection of
certain minimum socio-economic rights. It is hoped that this research will
contribute to more general debates on socio-economic rights as legally
enforceable rights. International human rights law While a strong supporter of international human rights law, I engage in critiques of current institutional supervision of human rights by the multitude of treaty based human rights bodies. My research focuses on the lack of clarity as to the precise scope and content of international human rights laws/norms, in particular as regards socio-economic rights. |
