Teaching Philosophy
As a professional teacher, I am responsible for providing a supportive learning environment centered around the interaction between learners and teachers. I act as a reflective, active and attentive teacher, believing that 'good teaching is open to change', providing challenging original materials and paying attention to students' abilities and development.

Enhancement of Teaching
As a reflective teacher committed to excellence in teaching and learning, I have used various forms of feedback to inform my practice and improve active student learning and critical thinking. Evidence of reflection on internal feedback includes: (i) School 'Stop/Start/Continue' questionnaires regularly used and reflected upon since the completion of the UT&L Graduate Diploma. They consistently praise my ability to provide clear and structured contents in each of all the diverse courses I teach or have taught (samples on file with Applicant available on request); (ii) UCD students surveys which consistently show high scores (3.50-4.30 range); extracts about what most helped student learning include: 'The chance to do a presentation helped me use what I had learned last year and also but my spoken/written French into practice. Good reading lists and slides'; 'The group assignment'; 'The clear concise notes and class interaction in lectures'; (iii) UCD peer-observations: 'To conclude, I would like to state that I was very impressed by the standard of teaching displayed. Dr Paris is an excellent communicator and an intelligent teacher. I believe that she is committed to her teaching and keen to continue to develop and improve her not-inconsiderable skills in this regard. At the post-observation meeting, we had a very constructive conversation as to the appropriate self-development strategy' (Professor Blanaid Clarke, Head of Teaching and Learning, 5 November 2006, French Private Law). Another report is available regarding a large group lecture in EU Law (Geraldine O'Neill, Centre for T&L, 6 November 2006).
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
I have proved my ability to design effective modules, programmes and curriculum structures which have maximised student learning. Challenges posed by the French Law programmes include the breadth of the course aimed at teaching public and private law, legal terminology and methodology, students' engagement in a foreign language, teaching students from two different programmes in the same class. High quality teaching techniques have facilitated the integration and successful progression particularly of Irish and international students in the programmes. The most effective techniques have included: (i) Regular review of curriculum structures of all coordinated modules including a linkage between UCD modules and programme structures of host institutions; (ii) Relevant use of learning outcomes to align teaching contents and assessments strategies (learning outcomes are discussed with students at the beginning and end of term); (iii) Systematic personalised written feedbacks on assignments; (iv) Emphasis on oral participation and written work in first and final years. The oral/written presentation and Questionneur system (ie another group of students have to ask three questions each to the group of presenters) is an original form of assessment which equips students with valuable communications and professional skills by training them to team work and active engagement, allows evaluation of language proficiency and appropriate use of foreign legal concepts. It diminishes risks of plagiarism by forcing students to justify their work in front of the class; (v) Commitment to field work aimed at showing law in practice (visit to French Cour de Cassation, dual degree students, in partnership with Cambridge University, 19 March 2010). Other curriculum initiatives and broader programme development have been realised at graduate level with a major role in creating new programmes (Graduate Exchange Programme), modules (Comparative Constitutional Law) and initiating significant course reviews (choice of legal skills and substantive law modules in the Masters Pathways-to-Law curriculum).
Developing as a Teacher
I have improved my knowledge and skills as a university teacher by successfully completing T&L substantial courses such as (i) UCD Higher Diploma, Centre for T&L, Induction programme for recently appointed academic staff, 2003-2004 (modules: The Reflective Practitioner and the Teaching Portfolio; The Dynamics of Effective Communication when Lecturing to Large Groups; Information Technology Applied to T&L in Higher Education) and (ii) UCD Graduate Diploma in UT&L, January 2006-October 2008 (modules: Reflecting on Practice, Improving Teaching through Practitioner Research; Education Theories through Problem-Based Learning; Literature Review). Example of positive individual assignment feedback:'The Enthusiastic Start': 'An excellent overview of the range of literature on motivation. Gives a broader historical and contextual view on the subject. Links very well with the educational theories'. I stay up-to-date with best teaching approaches by attending workshops and events with external teaching communities whether in my discipline (French law and comparative law teaching communities) or in generalist teaching communities (Irish Higher Education community). I have contributed to the support and training of academic colleagues through a sustained and dedicated peer mentoring of French law assistants (interviews, CVs, training meetings of tutors and lecturers on file with Applicant available on request; ten tutors/lecturers over the period 2004-2010).
Innovation & Leadership
I have been awarded the UCD Graduate Diploma in UT&L in October 2008 which aims at supporting academic staff in their teaching and learning development. I have also published in high standing international peer-reviewed journals on legal education ('Legal Education in Ireland: A Paradigm Shift to the Practical?' (2010) 11 German Law Journal 1067-1092, 'Challenging Exchange Programmes: Studying the Common Law and Civil Law Systems in a Joint Law Degree' (2009) 5 European Journal of Legal Education 47-57).
