Research Interests:

My primary research interest is in law's behaviour in times of terrorism-related crises, with a particular focus on the extent to which international human rights law might be able--either externally or through internal enforcement--to curb disproportionately repressive counter-terrorist law making. In this respect my particular interest is in the role of courts as a means of curbing executive excesses and protecting core democratic concepts (especially rights). This reflects my broader research interest in mechanisms of operationalising human rights standards, particularly at domestic level, and in the relationships between politics, power and law in times of crisis or catastrophe.
