International students bring a broad range of cultural and academic perspectives to the learning environment, and this diversity has the capacity to enrich teaching and learning in a university. However, it can also present many teaching and learning issues. This workshop is designed to highlight the needs of international students as learners and the challenges that can arise for teaching staff in a diverse intercultural classroom. It will introduce issues of cross-cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication to those who teach international students.
To discuss and explore strategies for improving the international student experience from a teaching and learning perspective.
In this half-day seminar you will:
Review and discuss the literature available on teaching international students
Identify the main barriers in terms of teaching and learning - assessment including academic writing and group work, learning styles of diverse cultural groups; language issues, cross-cultural communication including verbal and non-verbal behavior
Identify and solve problems with the help of others in the workshop
Plan for and offer better support to international students
