Rocque Maps: John Rocque's printed maps include plans of:

Andrews, J. H. (1967) ‘The French school of Irish land surveyors’. Irish Geography, 5 (4):275-293 provides a list of the maps made by John Rocque.

Simms, A. et al (Ed.) [n.d.]  Irish Historic Towns Atlas. Dublin: Royal Irish Academy.

Ireland's history in maps B.C-1840s is useful for: History, Geography and Genealogy. It has a special focus on ancient and medieval Irish tribes.

Ireland c.1558-1640

Early Irish Maps. The collection has more than 70 maps, digitised from the “State Papers Ireland” by the National Archives in the UK. These are among the earliest cartographic representations of Ireland and are available at a fee.

Kennys sells various maps of Ireland in the 1700s.

Taylor, G., and Skinner, A. (1978) Maps of the Roads of Ireland Surveyed 1777. London: G. Terry.

UCD Digital Library contains:

  • Historical Irish maps from the 18th century
  • Historical Irish maps from the 19th century
  • Maps by John Rocque
  • Fraser's Maps
  • Bound volumes of geological survey maps (1859-1913) originally held in the Royal College of Science that have been digitised and placed onto the UCD Digital Library into two collections. Enter "geological" into the search box.

Griffith’s Valuation was published between 1847-1864.  This was the first full-scale valuation of property in Ireland. It is an important source of 19th century genealogical information. It can be searched by family fame or place name.

National Archives of Ireland (NAI) holds Ordnance Survey (OS) records of Ireland since 1824:

Special Collections in the James Joyce Library has original copies of this series in bound volumes, covering the whole island, except for Co. Carlow. Arrangements may be made for photographic reproductions.

Irish Historical Geological Maps.
This site, developed jointly by Geological Survey of Ireland and Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, displays a range of historical geological maps, sections and memoirs of the island of Ireland, mostly from the 19th century.
Includes a set of 1:63,360 geological maps and a map index for locating relevant memoirs volumes.

CD-ROM Resources in Richview Library

1500s - 1900s

Counties in time: documents and commentaries from the National Archives of Ireland. This aims to introduce a sample of the records held in the National Archives of Ireland, covering the late 16th century to mid 20th century.

Taylor and Skinner's road maps of Ireland.
A facsimile reproduction of the original 2nd edition published in 1783, entitled: Taylor and Skinner's maps of the roads of Ireland, surveyed in 1777 and corrected down to 1783:

Shows distances in English and Irish miles .. and copious topographical details ... the large houses also give the owners names ... there is a personal name index at the back detailing every name recorded on the maps -- back cover

Dodd's traveller's director through Ireland, compiled from the most authentic authorities, by J.S. Dodd:
