Source of Acquisition Bequeathed to UCD by Dublin Physician Michael Cox.

Scope and Content

  • 14 individual manuscripts in Irish.
  • The most important manuscript is ms 14, Dubhaltach Mac Firbisigh’s Great Book of Irish Genealogies.
  • The manuscripts were written by various scribes at various dates from the late 18th to early 20th century. The contents include much verse song and prayer.
  • Ms 4 is a copy of the Irish life of St. Margaret.
  • Ms 5, signed by Thomas Hurly and dated 1818 and 1820, contains notes on plants and cures, accounts in English and verse in Irish.
  • Ms 9 contains prayers, catechism and other devotional material and was written by Seaghan Plaomann in 1773.
  • Ms 11 is a copy of Bryan Merriman’s Cúirt an Mheadhan Oidhche, with a translation by Dennis Wolfe. This was written by Michael Hanrahan in Kilrush, County Clare in 1789.
