Creator Gabriel Beranger (1729-1817)

Biographical History
  • Gabriel Beranger was born in the Netherlands. He moved to Dublin in 1750.
  • During the 1760s Beranger sketched ruins and standing buildings and other sites of interest in the Dublin area.
  • He exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1763 to 1768, contributing landscapes, sea pieces, and ‘medleys’.
  • In 1773 Beranger and another artist, Angelo Bigari, made a tour of western Ireland in 1779.

Source of Acquisition Purchased by UCD in 1968-9.

Scope and Content

  • 39 18th century watercolour drawings, done by or for Gabriel Beranger, and known as the ‘Beranger’ watercolours.
  • The subjects of the drawings are antiquarian sites containing general views and details of, principally, churches, abbeys and castles.
  • There is a small amount of pre-historic subjects.

Access The materials in this collection are available by appointment only to research students, teaching staff and scholars.

Research students should have a letter of recommendation from their supervisor.
