Improving the Library Space

Over the summer we have worked to improve a range of James Joyce Library spaces to ensure a better experience for our users. These improvements would not have been possible without the very significant support of UCD Buildings & Services .

Now Open! Library Hub - a social learning space overlooking the lake

Library Hub view taken shortly after opening

A high quality social learning space on Level 1 of the James Joyce Library opened on October 26th, 2012 and is already proving popular with our users.  With lovely views of the lake, this space provides wired spaces with PCs, individual work spaces including seating for laptop users, and much needed group and collaborative workspaces for our users and some soft seating as well.  These spaces will be available whenever the library is open, and do not have to be booked in advance.

James Joyce Library - entrance area and improved signage and information throughout

The entrance to the James Joyce Library was enhanced, with repainting, a new James Joyce themed Library welcome panel and and a new plasma information screen at the Level 1 entrance to the James Joyce Library.

Plasma screens have been introduced on levels 1, 2 and 4 and information points installed for all levels. Notices regarding library zoning and the basic rules have been updated to a smart icon-based approach, and the e-device free study zones more clearly marked. Noticeboards have been implemented for signs and posters around printers, copiers and elsewhere. Ceiling signage will shortly be updated to complete this work.

Special Collections

Improvements have been  made to the Special Collections Reading Room on Level 1 of the James Joyce Library and these are now largely completed.

Level 4 work in James Joyce Library

Book collections were compacted on Level 4 to ensure users can more easily find the materials they are looking for.

The Library Planning and Administration Unit have relocated to a new office suite there.

The Library would like to thank UCD Buildings & Services for supporting and assisting us in upgrading spaces for our users, increasing group study spaces, and providing new social learning space to better facilitate users and the way they learn today.
