Summer Projects 2017

We are undertaking a number of improvement projects during the summer of 2017. Read about them here.

The heating system on Level 2 of James Joyce Library is being upgraded.  This is essential work which must be done during the summer.     Commencing Friday afternoon 14th July, there will be disruption within the Postgraduate Research Centre, and the following spaces will be unavailable for a period of approximately two weeks – i.e. 14th July to 28th July inclusive.

Laptop spaces, 1-4

Study spaces 1-9, 32-34 and 39

Lockers 1-20

The remaining seats will be available for booking and use in the normal way.  All efforts will be made to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, and drilling will be scheduled before 11 a.m.    There will be no disruption after 16.00 each day, as contractors finish at that time.

As an alternative you may wish to book single study rooms during this period.

The following projects have now begun or are beginning soon:

Expansion of our Self-Service Laptop Loans

We are delighted to announce that we have installed a new laptop loan self-service kiosk in the Health Sciences Library and have extended our existing service in the James Joyce Library.  UCD Library, in partnership with UCD IT services, aim to have the following in place for the start of term:

  • Health Sciences Library has a new Laptop Loan self-services unit with 24 brand new laptops.
  • James Joyce Library is adding 12 laptops (repurposed from IT Services) to our existing self-service unit, which has moved nearer the Service Desk on Level 1.

Students can use the automated locker system with their UCard to borrow a laptop for 3 hours for use within the Library.  The service has proven to be extremely popular and aims to streamline the laptop loan service across UCD.

This service will be available soon.

Improving the JJL Heating System

A project commenced June 27th to improve the heating system on Level 2 of the James Joyce Library, a source of much user feedback.

There will be some disruption and noise during this ongoing project.

The Postgraduate Research Centre is now fully available to all eligible students. Thank you for your patience during the last few weeks.

New Library Website

One of our major projects this summer is the development of a new Library website.

  • We hope to go live with the new website in the middle of August
  • The website will have a fresh new design
  • The site will be based on the UCD templates with customisations to meet Library needs
  • It will be completely responsive with all pages working on devices of all screen sizes - our separate cut down website for mobile users will be discontinued
  • Our online Library guides will get a new complementary look and feel
  • Access to our web pages and online guides will be fully integrated, doing away with the two home pages that we currently operate

Summer Library Space Projects

A number of library space projects and stock moves will be taking place during the summer months.

Extension of Learning Spaces on Level 1 and Relocation of Collections

UCD Library has been granted capital funds to extend the very successful learning spaces on Level 1 of the James Joyce Library (the Library Hub) and to further develop spaces for Library staff.

The initial phase of the project involves relocation of Collections staff to Level 2, continuing the refurbishment of (1) unused and derelict space vacated by the former Audio-Visual Centre and (2) the adjacent area occupied by the former Law office and Official Publications store. To carry out this project the Official Publications collection will be relocated to a closed access space on Level 4 and other locations.

An architect will shortly be appointed, design work undertaken, and cost estimates provided. We anticipate that work will be completed in phases over the summer and autumn months. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

A follow-on phase of the project will focus on further development of user space freed up on Level 1 of the Library.

Folklore Compact Shelving

The compact shelving unit in the National Folklore Collection needs to be repaired. This summer we are working with staff in Folklore to decant this collection, take down the shelving and make repairs to the flooring area, and then replace the stock. This project is beginning on the 29 May and will take about 4 weeks to complete.

Archives Compact Shelving

Additional compact shelving is being installed in the sole remaining strong room in UCD Archives that has not been outfitted previously. Additional map cabinets are also being located in the maps room in that area. This work will begin at the end of June and will take about 3 weeks to complete.

Collections Projects

A range of projects in collections will be taking place, some of them to enable other space projects:

  • Official Publications needs to be moved from its current closed access location on Level 2. Much of it will be moved to Newstead, some will be moving to Level 4.  Early Irish Government material will move to Special Collections
  • Some re-positioning of Law stock may be required
  • Some re-positioning of Level 4 book bays and stock will be required and weeding will take place
  • Shelving in Health Sciences has to be re-arranged to facilitate installation of a self-service laptop loan unit
  • Anglo-Irish materials in the 800 sequence are being correctly integrated into the correct place on the shelves
  • The Short Loan collection is being weeded, following on from last year's succesful project, addressing low-use stock and that which is in poor condition
  • At our sites: Health Sciences has re-shelved all the stock, Blackrock are de-duplicating stock, Veterinary Medicine are consolidating stock
  • Our closed access stores are being significantly re-organised, with various moves to create a more logical storage arrangement
  • Our vinyl record collection is being weeded and then re-located

Temporary Card Kiosk

We know how annoying it is when you forget your UCard but still want to come into the Library, so we are installing a new temporary card kiosk at the James Joyce Library during the Summer.
The kiosk will be located close to the Library entrance gates. If you have forgotten your Student / Staff UCard all you need to do is follow the simple on-screen instructions, and the kiosk will print a temporary card that will give you access to the Library for the day.

The new kiosk will be a huge improvement on our current process of having to queue at the desk to get a day pass, and will further enhance our self-service options, particularly valuable during our late opening.

PC Replacement Plan

Following recent budget cuts UCD IT Services will be reducing the number of open-access PCs owned by IT Services.

For UCD Library, during Summer 2017, 8 of the 16 PC’s in the Health Sciences Library will be replaced but 8 and the 24 in the James Joyce Library, Level 4, will be removed.

Keep an eye on the PC Replacement Plan for more information.
