Where can I buy my own copy of EndNote?

A personal copy of EndNote can be purchased from Adept Scientific. You can get a discount if you are registered with an educational institution.

How do I back up my EndNote library?

When creating a backup of your library, make sure to copy both the .enl file (which is your library) and the .data folder (which contains your library structure and associated files).

To do this, copy and paste the .enl file and .data folder to your desired location, e.g. your H:\ drive or a USB key.

You can also use the Save a Copy command from the File menu in EndNote to create a backup copy of your library. This will create a copy of the .enl file and the .data folder in a selected location.

You can save your backup copy as a compressed library. Details are available on the EndNote website.

Can I transfer an existing reference list to EndNote?

If you have a list of references in word processor format, there are a few options for transferring them to an EndNote library:

1. Create a custom tagged format to import into EndNote.

  • In EndNote select Help > Contents > Importing Reference Data > Creating Files That EndNote Can Import > Creating a Custom "Tagged" Format
  • Follow the instructions

OR

2. Save your reference list as a “.txt” file

  • Copy/paste each part of each reference into its corresponding field in a New Reference in EndNote.

OR

3. Search for your references again in the relevant databases or in Google Scholar and import them to EndNote.

Can I search the UCD Library catalogue from within EndNote?

You can search the UCD Library Online Catalogue from within EndNote and add the results directly to your EndNote library

  • Go to the left hand pane in EndNote
  • Under Online Search click on more...
  • In the pop-up window scroll down and select U College Dublin. Click Choose
  • U College Dublin will now appear on the left hand pane in the group Online Search
  • If you select U College Dublin, the Search tab on the right hand bottom will change to “Online Search – Library Catalogue of University College Dublin
  • Perform a search and retrieve results. They will be added to your EndNote library.

Update Connection File

UCD Library implemented a new online catalogue in July 2012. Therefore connection files in EndNote versions installed before that date are pointing to the old catalogue (which will be switched off)

If you have EndNote installed on your computer you need to update the connection file.

  • Download connection file and save it on C drive > Program Files > EndNote X5 > Connections
  • When prompted replace the old file with the updated version.

Modify the connection file only if you have EndNote installed on your computer. For EndNote on Software for U or on PCs in IT Services computer labs changes will be made by IT Services.

The connection file in EndNote Web will be updated by Thomson Reuters.

What are EndNote filters?

Import filters are used to import information into your EndNote library. While some databases have built-in filters, which allow the information to be brought directly into your library, other databases require you to use specific filters. A variety of filters exist which correspond to various databases. Make sure you choose the correct one.

Can I share my references with colleagues?

Yes. By registering with and using EndNote Web you can share references with colleagues and vice versa. Alternatively, you can create a subject bibliography and email the references to your colleagues or copy the references into a new EndNote library and email it to them.

Can I use EndNote with LaTex and BibTex?

Yes. A full explanation can be found on this website.
