This page summarises terms and conditions of use of the Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA).
The remit of the IVRLA is to maximise the availability of collections of primary source material for use within an academic and research environment by providing online access to digitised copies of material held in several UCD repositories. These digital surrogates represent authentic copies of the analogue originals and their use is governed by the terms and conditions prescribed by the parent repository or required by its extant deposit agreements, collection procedures or acquisition policies. All digital images are copyright of the IVRLA (or participating repository if so noted) and may not be reproduced for any purpose without permission.
The opinions expressed in the content of this repository are those of the individual(s), institution(s) or corporate body/bodies concerned, and do not necessarily reflect those of the Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) or University College Dublin.
All digital images are copyright of the IVRLA (or participating repository if so noted) and may not be reproduced for any purpose without permission. Where relevant, the administration of the copyright and all other intellectual property rights in the original content made available through IVRLA rests with the parent repositories cited within the descriptive information and introductory sections for each collection.
This content is being made available solely for the purposes of research and education and as an alternative to directly accessing the analogue originals. Duplication of this content, other than as permitted by copyright legislation or authorised by the parent repository, is prohibited.
Any proposed use of the IVRLA digital material for purposes other than research or education should be directed to permissions.ivrla@ucd.ie giving the image handle, collection to which the image belongs, and purpose for which the image is to be used. In addition, any proposed use of the original material for purposes other than research or education should be directed should be directed to the appropriate UCD repository. Contact details may be found in the introductory section to each collection. It is the responsibility of the user to seek and obtain permission for any subsequent reuse of IVRLA content that is not for use within an academic or research environment, such as publication (including website and other electronic means), broadcasting and deposit in third party repositories.
All digital images and material are copyright of the IVRLA (or participating repository if so noted) and may not be reproduced for any purpose, including academic and research purposes, without permission. To request permission to reproduce any image or other digital file, please contact permissions.ivrla@ucd.ie giving the image handle, collection to which the image belongs, and purpose for which the image is to be used.
The IVRLA has obtained the agreement of the parent repositories to present these collections for research and academic usage, and has endeavoured to obtain the permission of all relevant rights owners for material being made available within the IVRLA infrastructure.
Any putative use of material by IVRLA without the permission of the relevant rights owners should be drawn to the attention of the IVRLA as soon as possible. Every effort has been made to trace and contact all copyright holders for material in the IVRLA repository. If you are a copyright holder and we have not adequately credited you please contact us at permissions.ivrla@ucd.ie.

The reproduction of any content which is permitted by copyright legislation, or which has been authorised by the parent repository, or the copyright or intellectual property owner requires an appropriate attribution of the source. The full title of the IVRLA is UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive and this should be used in all citations. Specific collections or objects from the IVRLA should be cited using normal bibliographic conventions and appropriate publication details for the source material (if appropriate) followed by IVRLA details (collection/research project, IVRLA title, persistent URL, accession date). A worked example for an individual object from a collection is given below:
Sullivan, A.M. A 'Nutshell' History of Ireland from the earliest ages to the present time. (London: Sampson Lowe, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1883). 19th Century Pamphlets Collection, UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive. <http://hdl.handle.net/10151/OB_1000196_SC>, accessed 30 October 2009.
Where files do not have a specific author or creator, the citation should start with the object title.
Many of the research projects contain material that has been created specifically for the IVRLA. In such cases, the roles field in the object description will give the name of the person who compiled or collected the data, together with a description of their role. The citation should start with this name and give the appropriate role in parentheses, followed directly by the IVRLA details (research project, IVRLA title, persistent URL, accession date). A worked example is given below:
Cullen, Clara (comp.). Catalogue containing details of speeches by Seán Lemass during his period as Taoiseach from 1959 to 1966. Speeches of Seán Lemass as Taoiseach Research Project, UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive. <http://hdl.handle.net/10151/OB_9100021_RP>, accessed 7 May 2010.
In cases where there are multiple roles, it is not necessary to give the more subsidiary ones. In the example above, the compiler is listed in the citation but the editor is not.
