Findings from the Lipgene Project:
Economics Workpackage
The economics workpackage was the first to report its findings.
The workpackage investigated, and has reported on, the following issues:
- The incidence and economic costs of obesity (used as a proxy for the metabolic syndrome) in the EU
- The costs of devising separate identity-preserved output and processing chains to supply foods with an improved lipid content to help to combat the metabolic syndrome in particular and obesity in general
- The case for official subsidies to lower the prices of such foods so that they are accessible to consumers.
Two workshops have taken place in Brussels and Munich to disseminate the information generated from this research to across the EU.
Discussions from the workshops and results from this workpackage have been used as the basis of a number of articles, copies of which are available below.
