Why initiate this research?
Obesity is a global epidemic bringing in its wake a range of related diseases including non-insulin dependant diabetes, which together with abnormal blood lipid patterns and high blood pressure forms the condition known as the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is major research focus of Lipgene.
It is estimated that by 2010, some 31 million EU citizens will require treatment for the metabolic syndrome and its related complications. Just as it will require a huge societal effort to redress the alarming growth in the incidence of obesity and its complications, equally it will require a huge integrated effort to tackle the exploding prevalence of the metabolic syndrome.
