Nutrition, Genetics and the Metabolic syndrome
Insulin resistance (a muted blood glucose response to insulin) is a key characteristic of the metabolic syndrome. We have always known that the composition of dietary fat influences insulin resistance. Only now are we beginning to understand how common genetic variations interact with this.
Nutrition & Lipgene
Lipgene will have access to data on 13,000 subjects who were tracked every two years for 8 years where full dietary biochemical, clinical and genetic data are available (http://istna.uren.smbh.univ-paris13.fr/sites/suvimax_en). The manner in which the dietary and genetic data interact to develop the clinical problem of the metabolic syndrome will be the focus of this study. Following on from this, we will conduct a human feeding intervention study in 8 cities across Europe to examine how variation in the composition of dietary fat influences the metabolic syndrome.
