The Newman Shield, another tradition of the society which spans several decades, is a large impromptu debating competition open to all members of the Literary & Historical Society. The competition affords all society members the opportunity to debate against each other to determine the best speakers in UCD, with entrants ranging from new and enthusiastic speakers, to more seasoned debaters.
The competition will be run over a number of weeks, with the four highest ranking teams progressing to the Grand Final - which promises to be highly competitive, and has always in the past been of an exceptionally high standard. Former winners of the competition have gone on to achieve huge success at national and international level, making it truly a fantastic competition to be a part of, as well as to win!
It is a fantastic opportunity for speakers who have competed in Maidens competitions, or who are looking to get involved with the society to gain added experience on campus, as well as offering valuable practice prior to inter-varsity competitions, and more importantly, it answers the timeless question: Who are the best debaters in UCD?
Details as to sign up and dates will follow nearer to the time.
