Bank of Ireland International Schools' Mace

Each year the L&H host the International Schools' Mace Championship, the largest mace tournament at senior cycle level in Ireland. It is the best introduction to college level debating available to secondary level students as well as offering a great opportunity for senior cycle students (4th- 6th year students) to gain invaluable public speaking experience. While primarily a national tournament, the competition is also open to teams from outside Ireland, and has been regularly attended by teams from the UK and Greece since 2004, adding a fantastic dimension to the competition.

The competition, which involves as many as 80 teams and is ever expanding, takes place on the 14th and 15th of October with five rounds of competitive impromptu debating, followed by Semi-Finals and a Grand Final. Prior to the competition on the Friday evening the L&H will provide a demonstration debate to familiarise new speakers with the format of the competition, the structure of arguments and the running order of each debate. After this, an introductory workshop given by some of UCD’s most qualified and most successful debaters will provide competitors with an opportunity to raise any questions they may have.

This year the competition is kindly supported by Bank of Ireland, whose generous support has allowed us to expand the competition to unprecedented heights with over 80 teams already registered. This makes this year's Bank of Ireland International Schools' Mace the largest senior-cycle mace competition ever held in Ireland.

If you would like to register for the competition, simply send an email to schoolsmace@literaryandhistorical.com and our convenor, Luke, will add you to the mailing list and ensure you receive all the latest information.
