Mathematics
Mathematics plays a key role in the quest to examine, describe and understand the world in which we live and it provides us with a language in which concepts can be expressed in a precise manner. Because of this it is a basic tool in all the sciences, economics, engineering, geography, computer science, banking, business, statistics, social science, and in many other fields.
In the last hundred years the growth of mathematics has been spectacular, stimulated both by the needs of commerce, science, and technology and by the intellectual challenges that mathematics itself provides.
The study of mathematics involves both problem solving and creative thinking. No other subject presents such a large collection of problems, many still unsolved, the investigation of which requires great effort and ingenuity and gives rise to work of elegance and beauty.
