Statistics and Actuarial Science

Statistics and actuarial science can be broadly thought of as the science of uncertainty. We live in an uncertain world, and statistics and acturial science gives us the tools and techniques to understand this uncertainty. Statistics impacts on virtually all areas of scientific endeavour including health science, social science, economics, engineering, biological and physical science. Actuarial science is complementary to statistics and is primarily concerned with assessing risk in situations including insurance and finance. These days there is no shortage of data -- by and large, data is cheap, but the ability to understand and model the processes underlying the data is quite scarce. A training in statistics or actuarial science will give you precisely this skill set and will make you highly employable in a variety of diverse areas.

The statistics and actuarial science group are involved in a wide variety of research areas including Bayesian computational statistics; mortality modelling; pensions; social and official statistics; spatial statistics and epidemiology. We have a thriving group of research students and offer prospective research students a stimulating environment to conduct research.

We offer a wide variety of degree programmes including statistics as a major component. Our actuarial and financial studies degree is the only full accredited degree of its kind in the Republic of Ireland. While our MSc in statistics is professionally accredited by the Royal Statistics Society. Our graduates are highly sought after, and find employment in a wide variety of areas. There has never been a better time to be a graduate in statistics and actuarial science.
