Mathematics is the science dealing with concepts such as quantity, structure, space and change. In short, it is the language that defines everything that does (and doesn't) exist. Study of this all-encompassing subject inspires a greater understanding of our world and reveals to us the humbling reality of how little we know about it.

Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty - a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.

- Bertrand Russell, The Study of Mathematics

Mathematical Software
It is a little known fact that every student in UCD has access to both Matlab and Maple (and many other software applications), both in UCD and at home. How so? Well, simply sign into your UCD Connect, go to IT Services and scroll down to "Software for U". Next you will have to download a small file based on your operating system (which will take a few seconds). Then install this package (about a minute or two). You can now access the applications by clicking on "here" and then simply choose among the 19 applications including Matlab, Maple, Mathcad.

Matlab is already on every computer in UCD and both it and Maple can be accessed in the JK Lab.

UCD has a finite number of licenses for these applications and so there is a maximum number of allowable concurrent users, however I doubt that at any one time these will all be in use.

"Software for U" is a new service from UCD IT Services that provides both staff and students access to a selection of the most popular academic application software from laptops and home computers - without the requirement to log into the Novell environment or to be on the UCD network. The service is available to any user whose device runs a Windows, MAC, UNIX or Linux operating system.
