New Appointment (02/04/13)

UCD has appointed Professor Cédric Villani as visiting professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences. Cédric Villani was awarded the 2010 Fields Medal for his proofs of nonlinear Landau damping and convergence to equilibrium for the Boltzmann equation. At the centre of much of his work is his profound mathematical interpretation of the physical concept of entropy, which he has applied to solve major problems inspired by physics. Furthermore, his results have fed back into mathematics, enriching both fields through the connection...

 Professor Cédric Villani

Cédric Villani is a very popular public figure in Ireland, as could be witnessed in the various scientific and public activities where he took part in July 2012:

(i) He was awarded membership in the Royal Irish Academy.

(ii) He participated in an International IUTAM Symposium, organised by Dr. Miguel Bustamante, from the School of Mathematical Sciences, UCD.  The Symposium was held at UCD in July 2012 (http://mathsci.ucd.ie/~miguel/IUTAM2012/).

(iii) He conducted the opening ceremony of the UCD IMAGINE SCIENCE Film Festival.

(iv) Also, he gave radio interviews where he promoted the importance of mathematics.

The strategic importance of the links of UCD with Cédric Villani cannot be overemphasised. His collaboration will put UCD as the leader in the Irish efforts towards the improvement of public interest in Mathematics and the development of research of the highest quality.
