Prof. Thomas Laffey receives Hans Schneider Award (19/06/13)

Prof. Thomas Laffey received the prestigious Hans Schneider award for his outstanding lifetime contribution to Linear Algebra at the recent International Linear Algebra Society meeting in Providence, USA. At the ceremony the president of the society Professor Steve Kirkland (NUIM) acknowledged Prof. Laffey's work, in particular his breakthrough results on the inverse eigenvalue problem for nonnegative matrices and his service to the mathematical community in Ireland and internationally.

The Hans Schneider Prize in Linear Algebra ("the Prize") is awarded by The International Linear Algebra Society ("ILAS") every three years for research, contributions, and achievements at the highest level of Linear Algebra. The Prize may be awarded for an outstanding scientific achievement or for lifetime contribution. The Hans Schneider prize was first awarded in 1993, previous winners of the award include Yoshi Ando, Mike Boyle, Richard Brualdi, Ludwig Elsner, Miroslav Fiedler, Shmuel Friedland, David Handelman and Peter Lancaster.
