UCD running a new series of problem-solving workshops in Mathematics entitled ‘Maths Sparks’

‘Maths Sparks’ is a four week programme hosted by undergraduate and post-graduate students from the School of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Education and is facilitated by lecturers in the School of Mathematical Sciences and the UCD Access Centre.

The programme will offer Transition Year and Fifth Year students opportunities to engage with mathematical puzzles and games that diverge from their post-primary curriculum.

The programme will be initially offered to schools involved with the UCD Access Centre. The aim of the workshops is to engage students in unusual mathematical tasks through problem based learning. Students will collaborate in small groups in the new Active Learning Environment rooms in UCD and will utilise and enhance their mathematical skills over the course of the workshops. We hope to ignite students’ interest in the topic and particularly hope that engaging with our undergraduate students will encourage some of our attendees to continue their studies in mathematics to third level.

Maths Sparks is funded by UCD Teaching & Learning though SPAC, a pilot initiative to facilitate the delivery of projects aimed at making UCD a better place to live, work and learn. You can find out more about SPARC and the other funded projects at the UCD Teaching and Learning Website
