Professor Clement Mouhot from the University of Cambridge to visit UCD (posted 27/02/15)

The School of Mathematical Sciences is delighted to host the visit of Professor Clement Mouhot from the University of Cambridge. Clement Mouhot is a brilliant young mathematician, who worked with Cedric Villani on non linear Landau damping.

Prof. Clement will give a talk  on Wednesday 4 March at 17:00 in Room A004 Health Sciences entitled Kac’s Problem in Kinetic Theory: at the crossroad of analysis, probability and statistics

Abstract
Kac presented in his seminal paper 1957 "Probabilistic foundations of kinetic theory" an attempt for deriving rigorously the Boltzmann equation from microscopic dynamics: the integro-differential equation for describing the binary collision is obtained formally as the limit of a particular jump process when the number of dimension goes to infinity. We will present this program of research, the questions of Kac and the link with the notion of entropy, and we will present some answers obtained recently by building connexions between the statistical aspects of the problem and modern PDE techniques.

Clement will also give a talk in the ACM Seminar at 15:00 the same day, entitled Exponential stability of slowly decaying solutions to Fokker-Planck equations.
