Migration and Citizenship Research Initiative

New Masters Programme
M.Soc.Sc. in Migration, Race and Ethnicity

This new Masters in Social Science, based in the School of Sociology, offers advanced, interdisciplinary academic training in two inter-related and pressing issues of the 21st century: racial/ethnic difference and migration.
The programme (full or part-time) is based on a foundation of 3 core modules:
· Sociological Research: Theoretical and Applied Issues
· Race, Ethnicity and Society
· Sociology of Migration

The programme will develop student knowledge and research skills through study, discussion and application of: cutting edge scholarship and policy research, key debates and practices in current policy areas in Ireland and Europe as well as the impact of these issues on everyday, social and civic life.
In order to tailor the programme to accommodate individual interests and career paths, students may take up to 3 electives chosen from modules offered in the School of Sociology or other Schools in the College of Human Sciences and the College of Arts and Celtic Studies. Students can therefore specialise in

  • various policy areas (eg., employment, health, education, equality
  • contexts of social and cultural change (eg., citizenship, civic participation, identity, linguistics, art/arts policy) and/or
  • social theory/research methods

The topic chosen for the required minor dissertation may also reflect and complement students’ interests and employment contexts.

This programme is valuable for those seeking advanced training and
postgraduate qualification for academic, policy or civic purposes.
The Migration and Citizenship Research Initiative at UCD Students will also benefit from the act activities of the Migration and Citizenship Research Initiative,
established in 2003. The MCRI is a multidisciplinary, inter-university and cross-sector research network that undertakes and supports cutting edge research at national and international levels. The work of the MCRI springs from the participation of numerous UCD staff and postgraduates, and national civic, statutory and university partners.
