ERASMUS Mundus Joint European Master in International Migration and Social Cohesion

The Joint European Master in International Migration and Social Cohesion (MISOCO) is a two-year international Erasmus Mundus Master's programme. Unique to Europe, it offers students the experience of studying at universities in three different countries.

The programme seeks to explore the critical elements of international migration and the incorporation of immigrants in the societies of destination. Its aim is to educate students in advanced theories, techniques, and methodologies in the field of Migration Studies, so they will be able to translate perceived and experienced societal problems into relevant and effective social science research.

Programme Outline

The first year is undertaken at two core institutes: the University of Amsterdam (1st semester) and the University of Deusto (2nd semester), both offering consolidated expertise in theoretical and methodological approaches to migration studies.

The second year is used for specialization at one of the other partner universities: University College Dublin, University of Latvia, University of Osnabrück or the University of Poitiers. Students will receive focused teaching and research supervision in their specialised areas by leading experts. Additional opportunities for an exchange with the Moldova State University, York University or University Antonio Ruiz de Montoya are also available.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a multiple Master’s degree issued by those Universities of the Consortium where the candidate has carried out his/her studies and a MISOCO diploma supplement.

In addition to their educational qualifications, candidates are selected on the quality of their education and professional backgrounds, their experience with and concern for migration issues, their multicultural sensitivity, and their linguistic abilities. A limited number of full scholarships are available each year.

The MISOCO master prepares students for doctoral study, further academic research and jobs in a variety of sectors, including advisory organisations, government institutions, NGOs and journalism.
