Message from the Head of School

Welcome to the UCD School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering. The school provides access to education and research opportunities that reflect the expertise and interests of some 20 full-time academic staff in the areas of design & manufacturing, materials, energy, and biomedical engineering. Our heritage ( predates the foundation of the Irish state. These buildings are now home to the Irish government as since 1989, we have been based on the UCD Belfield campus.

Mechanical engineers have had a major impact on the economic development of Ireland. As an example, consider the six McCabe brothers who gained their qualifications in UCD in the middle of the twentieth century. Their varying career paths reflect both the breadth of career options available to mechanical engineers and the scope of what they can achieve. Gerry McCabe served as Chief Aeronautical Officer in the air corps; Colum McCabe was general manager of Dublin Gas; Joe McCabe was chairman of the IDA, Irish Distillers and Irish Ropes; Jim McCabe managed Glen Abbey plc; Vincent McCabe became the Dean of Engineering & Architecture in UCD; and Frank McCabe became vice-president of Intel. A degree in Mechanical Engineering or its related disciplines is an excellent platform for a flexible and successful career.

Whether you are interested in studying Mechanical Engineering at UCD, in evaluating career options, or in exploring opportunities for research and innovation within the school, please feel free to browse our website and to contact us should you have any questions.

Professor Michael Gilchrist, Head of School.
