Short Biography:

Matthew Cotterell graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in University College Dublin with a B.E.(Hons) in 1977.  Between 1977 and 1983 he worked as a Design/Project Engineer in the chemical processing industry and joined the academic staff of CIT (then Cork RTC) in 1983. In addition to lecturing duties he became the founding manager of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing & Management Systems (CAMMS) in CIT; CAMMS is an Associate Member of the CIRP. At present he is carrying out research into the dynamics of chip formation during the orthogonal cutting of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V under the guidance of Prof. Gerald Byrne. In this project high speed imaging and dynamic force measurements are used to characterise the chip formation process. Mr. Cotterell is an active member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and of the Institution of Engineers in Ireland (IEI). He was awarded the SME International Education Award in 2002. He is currently Chairman of the Irish Manufacturing Committee (IMC) that organises the International Manufacturing Conference held annually in Ireland since 1984.
