Short Biography:

Timothy Halpin graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in University College Dublin with a B.E.(Hons) in 2003. He worked with the National Heat Treatment Centre until December 2003 and continues to enjoy a close association with them.  He began a PhD programme in January 2004 under Prof. Gerald Byrne investigating the wear behaviour and failure of PCBN cutting tools in interrupted hard turning. Timothy is a member of the IEI (Institution of Engineers of Ireland) and of the IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers).


Research Project:

The Performance of PCBN in Interrupted Hard Machining



This industrially sponsored research investigated the wear and failure of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) cutting tools in the interrupted machining of hardened steels. A wide array of disciplines including machining; fracture, dynamics, simulation, materials characterisation, design of experiments and others, were studied for this work. Experimental work included building a high-bandwidth integrated force sensor set-up; highly instrumented cutting experiments with high-speed DAQ; large-scale data processing in time and frequency domains; tool condition and failure analysis (including microscopy, SEM, TEM, EDX); workpiece composition and structure analysis and constructing FE simulations of the cutting process.
