Professor Byrne Elected President of the International Academy of Production Engineering (C.I.R.P.) 2009 - 2010

At the 59th annual general assembly of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP) in Boston, Massachussets, on August 23rd-29th 2009, Professor Gerry Byrne commenced his one year term as CIRP president. The CIRP aims to address scientifically, through international co-operation, issues related to modern production science and technology. The International Academy for Production Engineering takes the C.I.R.P. acronym from College International pour la Recherche en Productique and includes ca. 550 members from 41 countries worldwide. At the general meeting in Boston also, Dr Eamonn Ahearne was validated as only the third Associate Member to join CIRP from Ireland.

The CIRP was co-founded in 1951 by Engineer General Pierre Nicolau, Professors Albert Portevin, Oscar Peters and Erich Bickel, and Dr. Donald Galloway. CIRP aims to promote scientific research related to manufacturing processes, production equipment and automation, manufacturing systems and product design and manufacturing.

Through the worldwide events organised by CIRP, cooperative research is encouraged among the members of the Academy, also creating opportunities for informal contacts among CIRP members at large. The organisation particularly emphasises the industrial application of fundamental research work. Through the strong industrial membership, researchers can receive feedback from industry related to current industrial needs and their evolution. The CIRP organises an annual General Assembly featuring keynote and paper sessions and meetings of the Scientific and Technical Committees. The CIRP also publish various papers, reports, annals and other technical information as well as organising and sponsoring international conferences.
