ERASMUS & Non-EU Exchange Programme

Every year, more than 20% of students from UCD Engineering avail of the opportunity to study for a semester in one of our partner schools in Asia, Australia, Europe and the US.

The school has a strong and well-established reputation internationally. The programme has been very active at the international level, with an extensive Erasmus and International network of strong schools and regular visiting lecturers, critics and external examiners.

In UCD Engineering Stage 3 students have the opportunity to study abroad at another Global University where UCD has an Erasmus or Exchange agreement. This provides students with an invaluable opportunity to experience engineering in a variety of cultural contexts.

Qualifying Criteria for Study Abroad

Outgoing exchange students (either Erasmus or non-EU exchange) must have a good academic record.  As the decision is usually made in the Spring Trimester of Stage 2, the requirements below are based on Stage 1 and the Autumn Trimester of Stage 2.

To be approved for exchange, a student must normally meet all of these requirements:
  1. Stage 1 complete, with stage GPA 3.00 or higher
  2. earned 30 credits in the Autumn Trimester of Stage 2, with GPA 3.00 or higher
  3. no grade less than C- in any core module over those three Trimesters
A student with grades less than C- may be considered if all of these conditions are met:
  1. Stage 1 complete, with stage GPA 3.00 or higher
  2. earned 30 credits in the Autumn Trimester of Stage 2, with GPA 3.50 or higher
  3. no more than two grades less than C- in core modules over those three Trimesters
  4. no more than one grade less than C- in a core module in any one Trimester
  5. no grade less than D- in any module (core, option or elective) over the three Trimesters

All qualifying students are subject to final approval by the Engineering Programme Board Student Applications Committee (EPBSAC). A student who has been approved for exchange but who then does not complete all modules in Spring of Stage 2 (or Autumn Stage 3 where relevant) may have that approval withdrawn by EPBSAC. Such a student must contact the exchange coordinator as soon as the grades are published, to discuss how the incomplete module(s) will be remediated.

Students should speak with UCD Global in the first instance who can advise on the various study abroad opportunities; where past engineering students have studied and the application process and deadlines.
Students should speak with their Academic Exchange Coordinator for advice on module mapping only after the student has researched what courses to take at the host institution. They are;

UCD Global has developed a series of video information sessions for current UCD students interested in going on Exchange overseas on their website here.
