One of the largest sections within the School, our academic staff teach within a range of undergraduate and graduate programmes across the University within the subject areas of Anatomy, Medical Informatics, Medical Microbiology, Pathology, and Physiology.
Academic subjects within the Biomedical Science Section includes:
- Human Anatomy
- Medical Informatics
- Medical Microbiology
- Pathology
- Physiology
- Human Anatomy

Human Anatomy is offered in the form of subject- and system-based modules within a number of undergraduate programmes including MB BCh BAO (Undergraduate Entry and Graduate Entry Medicine), BSc in Radiography, BSc in Biomedical Health and Life Science, and BSc in Physiotherapy.
Our undergraduate teaching correlates the anatomical knowledge learned from independent study and cadaver dissection with the clinical application of anatomical principles, clinical skills sessions illustrating functional anatomy, surface anatomy practical sessions where group numbers allow, and integrate medical imaging in both dissection room and didactic teaching settings.
Cadavar dissection takes place within a state-of-the-art Human Anatomy Laboratory which integrates with our Diagnostic Imaging facility.
Postgraduate placements for PhD and MSc students are also available within this subject aligned with our core research interests.
There are also opportunities for students who excel at this subject to showcase their talents, with an annual James B. Coakley Medal in dissection, and Ambrose Bermingham Medal for excellence in written anatomical knowledge, and an opportunity to participate in the Henry Hutchinson Stewart award.
