Clinical Skills Laboratory
Located within the UCD Health Science Centre, the School's Clinical Skills Laboratory consists of a simulated ward, simulated resuscitation and procedure rooms and two physician consultation rooms.
The laboratory was commissioned with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment which allows not only remote montoring the students as they take a patient history or perform a clinical examination but also the recording of these simulated patient encounters to allow the student independently review their performances at a later date. Students find this facility extremely useful in building confidence in their clinical skills.
The laboratory also contains a wide selection of mannequins which allow students to practise clinical skills and a variety of procedures, such as intravenous cannulation, arthrocentesis and suturing; The laboratory also has “Sim Man” mannequins which are used to familiarize students with common clinical findings.
While the clinical skills laboratory is primarily used for the education of medical students it is also utilized for the training of other medical trainees such as immediate care responders (e.g. advanced paramedics) and the teaching of basic life support. The Irish Medical Council routinely use this facility to conduct aspects of their licensing examinations such as the Pre-Registration Examination Scheme.
