MSc in Group Analytic Psychotherapy

The MSc Group Analytic Psychotherapy forms the academic component of the final or Qualifying level of a three-tier clinical training in the theory and practice of group analytic psychotherapy. Put simply, to be eligible for this two year academic programme applicants must have already reached a particular 'milestone' in their clinical teaching.

Clinical training in Group Analytic Psychotherapy has been delivered since 1986 by the School of Psychotherapy (Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Mental Health Research) at St Vincent's University Hospital. As the only course of its kind in Ireland, it provides a rigorous and comprehensive professional formation in the practice of Group Analysis in conjunction with the Irish Institute of Group Analysis (IIGA). The latter is the recognised national accrediting body in the field of Group Analysis in Ireland.

The course attracts students nationwide from diverse academic and professional backgrounds and leads to a recognised psychotherapy qualification and professional registration with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). The clinical training takes, on average, six years to complete, progressing through three distinct tiers or levels, Introductory (2 years), Advanced (1 year) and Qualifying levels (3 years).

The MSc programme which is fully integrated into the final or Qualifying level of the Group Analytic training leads to an academic award which is additional and complementary to a separate professional qualification administered by the accrediting body IIGA.
