Founded in 2006 by the Charter Medical Group, the Charter Medical Centre is one of Ireland's newest private healthcare facilities. The Centre works with existing public healthcare providers to provide specialist clinical services at the interface between primary and secondary care.
Located in the Smithfield area of Dublin close to the Mater Campus, Charter Medical Centre is the location for the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital's Minor Injuries Clinic.
The Medical Centre also works in partnership with St Mary's Hospital, Phoenix Park. The St Mary's Elderly Care Clinic allows rapid, expert assessment of elderly patients and the St Mary's Rapid Access Clinic provides consultant-led geriatric care to patients with stable but urgent conditions by GP referral. The Centre provides a nurse-led outpatient service in the community to facilitate early discharge from acute hospitals.
The Charter Medical Centre also provides specialist clinics in:
- Sexual Health including STI care
- Healthcare Screening
- Healthy Ageing
- Diagnostic Imaging
in 2011, UCD and the Charter Medical Group concluded a research and teaching agreement which allows our medicine and radiography students to rotate through this modern clinic as part of their degree programmes.
As many of the consultant staff at the clinic are also employed at UCD affiliate hospitals, it is expected that this facility will be increasingly used as part of our innovative Medicine in the Community module, which aims to demonstrate to our students the continuum of healthcare providers from the local GP through to acute hospital care. It is also hoped that staff in the clinic will participate, as appropriate, in our clinical or translational research programmes.
