Ronan O’Regan Research Elective Clerkships Summer 2014

Applications are invited from students in Stages 4 & 5 of Medicine and Stage 2 & 3 of Graduate Entry Medicine who wish to obtain one of the clinical or research clerkships detailed below during the summer of 2014. The clerkships listed below are subject to availability.

  • Prostate Cancer Center University of California at Davis, Sacramento
  • Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia
  • Muiris X. FitzGerald Scholarship
  • Dr Nicholas and Mrs Maura Martin Scholarship

(1) Dept. of Pharmacology, University of Pennsylvania

Department of Pharmacology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

  • 2 six-week placements are available.
  • Selected candidates will work in Professor Garret FitzGerald’s laboratory. The range of research projects is very broad encompassing receptor biology; nuclear and membrane, cyclooxygenases; everything from zebra fish to human genetics; proteomics of oxidant stress.
  • Each student will receive a stipend ($2000) to help cover their travel and other expenses (sponsored by UCD North American Medical Graduates Association/ Atlantic Bridge).
  • Accommodation is not provided however assistance in finding accommodation will be provided by the contact person on site.

(2) Prostate Cancer Center, UC Davis, California

Prostate Cancer Center University of California at Davis, Sacramento

  • 1 six-week placement is available.
  • The selected candidate will work in the Prostate Cancer Center in Dr. Ralph W. deVere White’s laboratory.
  • Each student will receive a stipend ($2000) to help cover their travel and other expenses (sponsored by UCD North American Medical Graduates Association/ Atlantic Bridge).
  • Accommodation is not provided however assistance in finding accommodation will be provided by the contact person on site.

(3) Winship Cancer Institute, Emory, Georgia

Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia

  • Two, six-week placements are available.
  • The selected candidate will be working under Dr. Ruth O'Regan, Director Clinical and Translational Breast Cancer Research.
  • Each student will receive a stipend ($2000) to help cover their travel and other expenses (sponsored by UCD North American Medical Graduates Association/ Atlantic Bridge).
  • Accommodation is not provided however assistance in finding accommodation will be provided by the contact person on site.

(4) Muiris X. FitzGerald Scholarship

  • Two placements are available.
  • The student will receive a stipend of €2000 to support a clinical elective, research elective or humanitarian elective related to medical care.
  • Students will have the opportunity to select their own elective with the support of the School of Medicine of Medical Science.

(5) Dr Nicholas and Mrs Maura Martin Scholarship

  • One placement is available.
  • The student will receive a stipend of €2000 to support a clinical elective, research elective or humanitarian elective related to medical care.
  • Students will have the opportunity to select their own elective with the support of the School of Medicine of Medical Science.
  • The Dr Nicholas and Mrs Maura Martin Scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of Dr Nicholas Martin (BDS 1945, MB BCh BAO 1947) and Mrs Josephine Mary (Maura) Martin nee Bulger (BDS 1950) by their children (the Martin Family) to celebrate and honour their parents’ life work in the field of medicine.

How to Apply

Ronan O’Regan Research Elective Clerkships Summer 2014

  • Applications should be in the form of an essay of 1000 words on ‘Why I should be selected for the 2014 Research Elective Programme’.
  • Applications must be submitted by email only to international.medicine@ucd.ie to arrive no later than 10am on Monday 13th January 2013. All applicants will receive confirmation of receipt of their application by email.
  • The Research Elective Cover Sheet must be completed and should accompany essays as a separate attachment.
  • The name or student number of the applicant must not appear on the essay.
  • Applicants should clearly indicate their order of preference of electives only listing those placements which they are fully committed to accept if offered.
  • Students who score highest in the competition will be given first preference.
  • A selection committee comprising of the Academic staff members of the School of Medicine and Medical Science will review the anonymous applications. Academic history is taken into account.
  • The Committee will meet in early February to consider applications and successful applicants will be notified thereafter and asked to confirm acceptance of their placement offered. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified at the same time. Any placement declined by a successful applicant will be offered to the next applicant with the highest score who has listed a preference for the elective.
  • Only students, who will accept an elective if offered, should apply.

School of Medicine Clinical Elective Clerkships Summer 2014

Applications are invited from students in Stage 5 of Medicine and Stage 3 of Graduate Entry Medicine who wish to obtain one of the clerkships detailed below during the summer of 2014. The clerkships listed below are subject to availability.

(1) University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

  • Each student will receive a stipend (€2000) to help cover their travel and other expenses (sponsored by UCD).
  • Electives are of 4 weeks duration, maximum of 8 weeks permitted.
  • Accommodation is not included.
  • Two Placements are available.

(2) Emory Healthcare, Emory University, Georgia

  • Each student will receive a stipend (€2000) to help cover their travel and other expenses (sponsored by UCD).
  • 2 placements are available in haematology/oncology with Dr. Ruth O’Regan.
  • Electives are of 1-month duration beginning in August.

(3) Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri

  • Each student will receive a stipend (€2,000) to help cover their travel and other expenses.
  • 4 placements are available in the Infectious Diseases Division.
  • Electives are of 2-month duration. Accommodation is not provided.

(4) Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

  • Each student will receive a stipend (€1000) to help cover their travel and other expenses.
  • Two clinical observership placements are available.
  • Electives are of 1-2 months duration, and two UCD students must start the elective simultaneously.
  • Accommodation is not provided.

(5) University of Descartes, Paris

  • Clinical elective available in Fetal medicine / obstetric unit of Prof Yves Ville in the University of Descartes in Paris.
  • Working knowledge of French language essential (interviews with a native French speaker will be required).
  • Support for flights and living allowance available.
  • Two placements are available.
  • Open to UGM Stage 5 and GEM Stage 3 who have completed the OBS/GYN rotation or are due to complete it before Summer 2013.
