UCD Surgeon Elected President of European Society of Coloproctology
Professor Ronan O’Connell, UCD Professor of Surgery at St Vincent’s University Hospital, has been elected President of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), a leading international surgical society with over 900 members across 53 countries.
ESCP is dedicated to promoting and advancing the science, knowledge and practice of coloproctology in Europe with a focus on training, standards and accreditation - working closely with the UEMS Division of Coloproctology; scientific meetings and high quality multi-disciplinary clinical events; continuing professional education and collaborative research within Europe.
ESCP was formed in 2005 from a merger of EACP (European Association of Coloproctology) and ECCP (European Council of Coloproctology. It currently has over 900 members from 53 countries.
Prof O’Connell’s election took place at the organisation’s Annual Scientific Congress which was held in Belgrade, Serbia in September 2013 and which was attended by almost 1200 delegates. ESCP is affiliated with UEG (United European Gastroentrology), ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology), ECCO (European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization) and has reciprocal association with ASCRS (American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons).
In 2013, ESCP will support 10 international exchange fellowships for trainee colorectal surgeons, pre-conference visits to colorectal units and travel bursaries to the annual meeting of ASCRS and the Japanese Society of Coloproctology. In 2014 ESCP will jointly host the Tripartite Colorectal Meeting in Birmingham, UK, with the Association of Coloproctology GB&I and the Royal Society of Medicine. The 2014 ESCP meeting will be held in Barcelona, Spain 24-26th September. In September, 2015 the annual meeting will be held in Dublin.
