Irish Pregnancy App Shortlisted for Prestigious International Web Award

An innovative Irish web application, Life in the Womb has been nominated in the 18th international Webby awards, the Oscar awards of web application and web development.  Developed by The Science Picture Company, the app provides a stunning visual guide to pregnancy, charting the journey from conception to birth.

Life in the Womb has been chosen from 10,000 worldwide applications and is the only Irish application to be nominated.  It has beaten off such luminaries as Disney Interactive and Scholastic Learning to earn a place among five finalists in the mobile & apps Education & Reference category where it will battle against the popular Tedtalks app.  This category is chosen by experts in the field of web app development.

Life in the Womb has also been nominated in the People’s Voice award, a category which is voted on by the general public.  The School is happy to endorse this product and encourage all to support this dynamic young Irish web company.

You can vote for ‘Life in the Womb’ at the 18th International Webby Awards site by entering an email and password.  After voting, make sure that you follow the verification link which will be emailed to you otherwise your vote will not be counted.  Voting closes on Friday 25th April 2014 so get in early and vote, then tell your friends to do the same!

Several UCD staff and graduates have participated in the web app development.  The narrative was written by science journalist and UCD graduate, Dr Claire O’Connell while clinical guidance was provided by Dr Cathy Allen, Dr Mark Hehir and colleagues at the National Maternity Hospital.  Dr Jason Last, Associate Dean for Programmes and Educational Innovation was a contributing reviewer during the development process.

Dr Last was particularly impressed by the quality of the images, the graphic design and the clean user interface.  Although ‘Life in the Womb’ has been developed specifically for an audience of prospective parents, the School is working with The Science Picture Company to further annotate the images such that these would be suitable for medical education purposes also.

Dr Rhona Mahony, Master at the National Maternity Hospital remarked that

"Life in the womb is beautifully captured in this extraordinary app which depicts fetal development week by week. Stunning interactive imagery illustrates life's most amazing journey. It is astonishing and anybody interested in pregnancy will love it"

Life in the Womb swept the boards at ‘The Appys’, the Irish web application awards in November 2013 by taking the best educational app, best medical app, best overall tablet app and the Grand Prix Winners prize.  We wish Eoin Winston and his colleagues at The Science Picture Company continued success with their app and our very best wishes in the Webby awards.
