PMC Farewell 2014

Mon, 24 February 14 18:00

On Wednesday last, 19th February 2014, the School bid a fond farewell to the latest cohort of our students who return to Malaysia to complete their clinical education at Penang Medical College.  The PMC Farewell has become a poignant event in our School calendar as we say ‘Slán abhaile’ (literally ‘safe home’ in Gaeilge) to good friends and classmates.

The School is proud of our multi-national, multicultural student body and our students from Malaysia are an integral part of that long tradition. They enrich our programme as enthusiastic participants in academic, cultural and social events bringing Malaysian sophistication and glamour to Irish mayhem.  However, in what can only be described as an Irish way of describing things, the ‘PMC Farewell’ is in fact a celebration of the return to Penang Medical College, Penang.

The farewell reception is a chance for stage 4 Malaysian students to commemorate their time with us at UCD. The reception is coordinated by the Malaysian Society and involves speeches and recollections from returning students.  On this occasion, the students were presented by the Dean with certificates of completion of their pre-clinical studies.  The students took the opportunity to present teaching awards to a number of UCD academic staff including Dr Thomas Flanagan and Dr Koon Meng Chan.

Speaking at the event, Our Dean Prof Patrick Murray noted that,

“The connection with Malaysia is something we cherish deeply. The PMC students’ presence is a wonderful academic, social and cultural addition to the School of Medicine and to UCD. They go on to complete their studies in Malaysia and become great ambassadors for UCD across South East Asia.  We look forward to welcoming some of them back as young doctors and future academics. "

This year’s event was attended by returning students, their classmates and staff.  Guests of honour at the event included the Malaysian Education Attaché to Ireland, Mr Norazilee bin Abd Aziz and the MARA Student Affairs Officer, Mr Abdul Rahim bin Ahmad.
